Mental health involves our thoughts, feelings, and well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and behave. It also helps determine how we respond to stress, interact with others, and make choices. It is important at every stage of life, from childhood to adolescence to adulthood. According to the World Health Organization, mental health is a state of mind that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, develop their abilities, study, work well, and contribute to society.
Mental health is as important as physical health. These are all important aspects of overall health. Depression, for example, increases the risk of many physical health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, and stroke, especially in the long term. Therefore, it is important to take care of our brain as much as we take care of our body.
Mental illness can affect a person’s daily life, relationships, and physical health. Other factors in people’s lives and relationships can affect their health. Since there is no single cause of dementia, many factors increase the risk of dementia.They include;
- Adverse Childhood Experiences, such as trauma or a history of abuse.
- Having feelings of loneliness or isolation.
- Biological factors or chemical imbalances in the brain.
- Experiences related to other ongoing (chronic) medical conditions, such as a traumatic brain injury, cancer, or diabetes
- Use of alcohol or drugs.
According to NIMH, the following steps can help people take control of their health by reducing disease risk, increasing energy levels, and managing stress:
